The Leaving America series has been phenomenal, but this one really resonated. This quote, "honestly the greatest lesson I learned about the world is that America is not #1 at anything except gun violence, obesity, and economic inequality among OECD countries" so perfectly, and sadly, sums up the US right now.

Thank you for this series. I'm a newly minted expat to Paris and reading and discovering stories related to this experience are easing my world view. Choosing a life outside the culture of childhood, and especially in a society like France with strict social codes, specificities of language, and increased globalization of culture is one worth documenting and dissecting.

Great interview and discussion. A small comment which is fitting for the theme of Americans learning more about the rest of the world: we Canadians also celebrate Thanksgiving…in October. It is an important day of celebrating the harvest and being with family:)

This whole series is so thoughtful and thought provoking. I particularly liked this particular questionnaire because of the candor and discussion of the "bitter and the sweet." Thank you, Lindsey.

This is one of my faves in this series so far. Thanks Lindsey and thanks to Drew for his candor. The sports kicker made me laugh. My husband (who has an EU passport!) and I see Paris in our future—at some point and at least temporarily—but I will not lie. As someone who watches virtually every NY Yankees game on TV, the sports part is a real drawback!

This is a wonderful interview. Thanks, Lindsey! Thank you, Drew, for articulating so many of my own feelings and experiences about living abroad. What a great set of questions at the end for anyone considering uprooting their life to move abroad —so accurate. In the end, if you have a deep desire to explore another country from the inside, you can make it happen and make it work. But it’s no holiday!
